Story of a Prostitute

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2006 09:51 (A review of Golden Chicken)

Quick plot outline: "After his attempted robbery runs aground, a thief takes a shine to his would-be victim -- a charming prostitute -- who begins to tell him her life story" (from IMDb). The movie as a whole didn't really do it for me. I sat through it a little uninterested but I wanted to finish it - and I'm glad I did. The ending really pulls the movie together and realizes the purpose of everything you've been told. It's a touching story worth a watch.

Bloody Buns

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2006 09:48 (A review of The Untold Story)

This movie pulls no punches. It's disgusting, bloody, and has a couple parts that will make you cringe. It's crazy to see Anthony Wong play a role like this if you are used to his later movies (where he almost always plays a cop). Give it a try if you are not squeamish and enjoy the idea of un-realized cannibalism.

Great film!

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2006 09:45 (A review of Wu Yen)

I caught this on TV over Christmas holiday and I was completely mesmerized. It's funny, it's touching, it's magical - everything you'd want in a movie. There are a few parts where it feels like it drags a little bit which prevent me from giving Wu Yen a 10, but it's still a killer movie that no fan of HK cinema should miss.

Meh

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2006 09:43 (A review of House of Flying Daggers)

I waited for this movie for quite a while so maybe it's my own fault for hyping it up too much but I was really let down by House of Flying Daggers. The drum/dance scene was phenominal and worth the price of admission alone, but other movies do what this movie tries to do a lot better. There are way better wuxia movies out there, go watch those instead.

Funny movie

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2006 09:40 (A review of Kung Fu Hustle (Widescreen Edition))

This movie was hilarious the first time I saw it. There are a few scenes that really missed the mark but on a whole I loved it. After some time however it just didn't seem to have the lasting power of some of Steven Chou's other movies - especially Shaolin Soccer. Maybe not fair to compare the two, but Kung Fu was definitely the weaker movie. Still worth a watch, but maybe not worth the own.

Overrated

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2006 09:37 (A review of Meteos)

Everyone loves this game, and while it is fun for a little while, it gets tired quickly. I think the hype is most (if not all) for the DS train - DS owners needed a puzzzle game and Meteos was there. Other people have gotten more out of it, but for me: decent, but not very long lasting.

Another good metroidvania game

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2006 09:34 (A review of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow)

One of the better Castlevania games to come out in a while, Dawn of Sorrow has everything you would expect it to deliver. There's not a whole lot of surprises so it's hard to rate it higher than an 8, but if it aint broke...

It's good fun while it lasts, but at the core it's just another platform/adventure with RPG-like stats.

Crazy movie

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 2 October 2006 01:25 (A review of Hail the Judge)

This is one crazy ass movie, even coming from Stephen Chow. I saw it on TV in Taiwan but have yet to find the DVD. It is completely over the top, full of culture references and contains an insult battle like never seen before. Recommended for fans.

Beautiful movie

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 2 October 2006 12:23 (A review of Rear Window (Collector's Edition))

I love the directorial decisions made in this movie. It would definitely be a daunting task to film an entire film from one location without it seeming long an boring but Hitchcock pulls it off like none other can.

A slight miss

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 2 October 2006 12:20 (A review of Faust, Love of the Damned)

The movie was pretty good for what it was. If you are not a fan of Jeffrey Combs you might want to stay away altogether, part of the charm of Faust is the camp. There's a decent amount of blood and a decent amount of nudity, but I was expecting a gorefest from the DVD box. Worth a view if you're into it I guess.
